Statue of Chakravarti Samrat Harshavardhan Bais Removed: A Blow to Cultural Heritage

In a disheartening move, the statue of Chakravarti Samrat Mahadani Harshavardhan Bais, a ruler known for his benevolence and cultural contributions, has been removed by the BJP government from Alopibagh Tirahe in Prayagraj after standing tall for two decades. This decision, executed under the orders of the Kumbh Mela administration and facilitated by the Public Works Department, has sparked outrage among those who value India’s rich historical legacy.

A Benevolent Emperor’s Legacy

Samrat Harshavardhan, a ruler of the 7th century, was a visionary leader whose reign is celebrated for peace, prosperity, and cultural enrichment. As the architect of the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, he popularized the congregation, dedicating 75 days during the festival to donate his entire treasury—including royal attire—to Brahmins, Buddhist monks, and the needy. His devotion to Lord Surya, Shiva, and Buddha exemplified his inclusive approach toward faiths.

Chinese traveler Xuanzang, who visited Harsha’s court, recorded glowing accounts of the emperor’s governance, generosity, and the flourishing of arts and education under his reign. Harsha’s capital, Kannauj, became a hub of cosmopolitan culture, attracting scholars and artists from across the world. His contributions to institutions like Nalanda and the promotion of yoga, puja, and bhakti practices further solidified his legacy as a cultural pioneer.

The Statue’s Removal: An Attack on Heritage

Installed 20 years ago at Alopibagh Tirahe to honor this great ruler, Harshavardhan’s statue was unceremoniously removed under the pretext of development. The statue has now been relocated to a less prominent site at the CMP Dot Bridge Chauraha. Critics argue that this act not only disrespects the memory of a historical figure but also reflects a disturbing trend of erasing India’s authentic history.

Distortion of History and the Role of Government

The BJP-led government, along with organizations like the RSS, has often been accused of distorting history to fit their narratives. This incident raises questions about the priorities of a government that claims to uphold Hindu values while systematically sidelining icons like Harsha, whose contributions shaped India’s cultural and spiritual identity.

Despite the magnitude of this decision, there has been deafening silence from political leaders and the larger Hindu community. The removal of Harsha’s statue is not just an insult to his memory but also a warning sign of how deeply rooted historical revisionism is becoming in the current socio-political landscape.

Why the Silence?

This act of cultural vandalism highlights a larger issue: the apathy of the very people who should be standing guard over their heritage. The Hindu community, often vocal about religious pride, seems indifferent to this affront to one of their most illustrious historical figures. It begs the question: Are we so consumed by divisions and petty rivalries that we cannot unite to protect our own legacy?

A Call to Action

The removal of Samrat Harshavardhan’s statue is more than a physical act—it is symbolic of a systematic effort to erase and rewrite history. It is imperative for every Indian who values their cultural heritage to raise their voice against such injustices. Let us demand the reinstatement of Harsha’s statue to its rightful place and ensure that the legacy of such a great ruler is preserved for future generations.

Our silence today could lead to the erasure of our identity tomorrow. Let us act before it is too late.
